Vacation with Hummingbirds Southwest states including Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas have the most and most diversified hummingbirds. Ramsey Canyon Preserve in Arizona and Davis Mountains State Park in Texas are recognized for common and rare hummingbird sightings.
If such sites are too far, visit a botanical garden with many sugar-water feeders for a day. Fall migration brings hummingbirds by the dozen.
Attend a Hummingbird Festival Hummingbird festivals are the best location to meet excellent people. These incidents occur nationwide.
Festivals are held in migration-heavy areas throughout July–September. Two of the best are the Texas Rockport-Fulton HummerBird Celebration and Arizona Sedona Hummingbird Festival.
Start a Hummingbird Journal The following activity can be done at home. Record your yard's hummingbird activity. First hummingbird arrives in spring, last one leaves in October.
Many visit your feeders? How do their daily activities change? Notice weather and feeder placement changes, and write down humorous hummingbird anecdotes!
Add a Hummingbird Window Feeder Imagine the excitement of a 0.1 to 0.2-ounce hummingbird (less than a marshmallow) coming to your window.
During nesting season and before migration, when hummingbirds are energetic and hungry, add feeders. Choose a suction cup feeder for glass. Be near your windows so birds get used to you. Stay tuned for a hummingbird closeup!
Volunteer for Hummingbird Banding The North American Bird Banding Program has banded birds since 1920 to study migration, lifespan, and population. Fewer than 1% of birds banded are hummingbirds, making banding quite specialized.
Banders are exceptional and have specific permits. Attend hummingbird festivals or critical flyway migration events to volunteer at banding events.
