It's not required to remove feeders during the winter. They start eating a lot and eventually migrate according to the length of the day rather than the quantity of food available.
Some hummingbirds that did not complete their journey and late-season yearlings may find refuge in your well-maintained feeder during cold weather. Consider keeping at least one feeder open all year round once their migration in your area has concluded.
In the winter, leave feeders outside, particularly if you reside in the Southeast, west of the Rocky Mountains, or along the border between the United States and Mexico.
The majority of hummingbirds migrate to overwinter in southern Mexico and Central America, but it's becoming more typical to see some of them in the milder U.S. regions along the regular migration paths, including the Southeast and West Coast.
All through the year, keep at least one hummingbird feeder in good condition. In the event of an abrupt or protracted cold snap, the extra energy they receive can be the difference between life and death.
